MySQL Server Has Gone Away When Creating/Altering Tables (no replies)

Hi,

I just started using Workbench, it's wonderful, but for some reason I immediately get the "MySQl Server Has Gone Away" error when trying to submit changes to a table from the popup window. I've increased every timeout-related server variable I could find to a large number (3600 seconds) and this hasn't helped.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Workbench 5.2.25

Any ideas?
