Workbench SSL without Cert (no replies)

Using Workbench 6.3.9 (Windows 7) and configuring to an AWS RDS MySQL instance I consistently get a secure connection with every "Use SSL" Workbench value (If Available, Require, Require and verify CA & Require and Verify Identity). How does Verify CA and Verify Identity work without certs of any kind? New to MySQL.
