Malformed packet error with Workbench 6.3.9 (no replies)

I've just installed MySQL Workbench 6.3.9 and when I try to connect to my database, it fails with a "Malformed packet" error.

However, I can connect successfully to the same database from the command line or using Sequel Pro.
