No mySQL service found when setting up first connection (no replies)

I am just starting to use mySQL and mySQL workbench and am going through the tutorial about setting up a new connection.

I started up XAMPP and made sure that both Apache and mySQL are started.

Then in Workbench I clicked on the '+' for Connections, and then the 'Configure Server Management' button to start the connection wizard.

My Database connection tests just fine.
But on the next screen for "Set Windows configuration parameters for this machine" I get the following:

*****************************************************************************
Windows management requires a user account on this machine which has the required privileges to query system status and to control services. For configuration file manipulation read/write access to the file is needed.

No MySQL service found.
*****************************************************************************

I've tried setting my root login and password, as well as my DBAdmin login and password.

What am I doing wrong?
