install mysql community root password (no replies)

Using installer to create mysql on PC. All ok until config when it asks for root password. what is the initial root password? have tried leaving it blank and setting root password underneath but intial config fails.

how can i overcome this? trying to connect via workbench also fails with or without password. seem unable to get past this point.

any ideas / solutions welcome
